Growing up in coastal southern California, one of my favorite places to go was the home of my father’s longtime friend John. His house was large and ornate, but the real star of the property was his tropical-themed backyard.
The property sat on roughly an acre of land that had been utterly transformed into an expansive tiki paradise. There was a full sized outdoor living room modeled after a tiki hut, complete with bar, entertainment center, and dining area that was fully shaded and had little fans and sprinklers for especially hot days.
The house had an enormous pool and spa, with a gaming area attached nearby with every kind of outdoor lawn game you could think of. The planters were filled to the brim with luscious tropical plants that filled the entire space with the sweet smell of ripe fruit and jasmine.
I made it my goal as a young boy to someday have my own outdoor jungle adventure area, and that goal sat with me through the years until I owned my own home in the San Diego area. Finally, it was my turn to create my own outdoor tropical oasis!
Unfortunately, by that time the reality of our state’s climate had started to catch up with me. Water is now much more expensive than when I was a kid, and it kills me to say that it was just too irresponsible for me to use the amount of water necessary to keep that kind of yard alive.
