As a kid, when I watched the film ‘Ghostbusters’, I never understood the Walter Peck character and why he was so dead set on making the Ghostbusters’ lives so miserable. After all, didn’t he know that they were helping to save the town from all those rampaging spirits?
As I got older and began getting more interested in the interplay between private businesses and the government agencies in charge of keeping them in line, things began to make more sense. Peck’s desire to shut down the unregistered and mysterious scientific equipment running in the middle of New York City made a lot of sense after reading about the kind of damage that had wrought on smaller communities and the nation’s airs, waters, and lands all over the country during the Gilded Age.
This discovery left a big impression on my mind, which is why I started trying to only support those companies that were making a strong push to ‘go green’. Unfortunately, many industries appeared to be stuck in the old ways, which made it difficult to stay principled during emergency situations.
One such emergency situation just happened during a major remodel of my home. As the contractors cut into the wall of my garage, they discovered a huge infestation of termites that had set up shop during the time my family had been mostly staying out of the home.
With images of noxious green gas and horrible industrial chemicals dripping from my gutters into the sewers, I began to fret that my desire to keep the bugs from my home would cause ecological catastrophe. Luckily, however, there are companies even in the pest control industry that have recognized the need to move in a more environmentally friendly direction!
In the southern California area, Natural Science Exterminating has been providing termite extermination services using a variety of naturally occurring chemicals that will not bioaccumulate in the local foodchain. Chemicals like Boron and Orange Peel Oil do plenty of damage to the bugs, but luckily leave the creatures that might eat them totally alone.
The services the company provides are also top-notch, as attested to by the large number of positive reviews you can find online. Here’s a small sample of what I found:
My husband and I were in the middle of a remodel and were informed that we had a termite infestation. Our contractor referred us to David DeGraw, the President of the company. He was able to come out immediately to assess the problem and schedule a spot treatment the same day. We were so impressed with his timeliness and ability to meet our needs so quickly. He also prevented any delays in our construction process. David was professional, courteous and attentive. We will continue to use him in the future for a yearly inspection as we were so impressed with his customer service skills. We will also highly recommend Hired Gun Exterminating to all our friends. Thank you David for saving the day.

We had a great experience with natural science exterminating. The inspection. Was done quickly after we called and the explanation of our small termite problem was explained clearly. They presented us with a few options for treatment and didn’t pressure any of them. When we called for service they were out within a few days and the tech who did the work, Brian was excellent. He explained what he was doing, what he needed from me and was super careful while he did his work. He left all the areas he worked in cleaner than they were before he got there. He was also very quick and efficient.
