It started out as the occasional weed wacking every other weekend in my yard, but now I'm a woman on a mission! Spring is upon us (I know many of you are still knee-deep in snow, but hey, this is Southern California) and I have visions for a beautiful backyard. A woman on a budget with visions of luxurious landscapes...hmmmm? How does this work?

First, the vision, then a Plan of Action.
Second, commitment to hard labor.
Third, search CraigsList.com

During the last couple of weekends, I have been filling my big green bin with a ton of weeds from my backyard (and I've barely made a dent!). But somehow, the experience of this back-breaking work has been oddly therapeutic. And during the weed-pulling process, I have had my eye-opening, one-with-nature, satisfying moments; as well as my frustrating, wanting-to-pull-my-hair-out and scream moments.

The weeds continue to feel like a metaphor for my life somehow. Pulling those suckers out of the ground, getting the whole root out, is oddly gratifying.

And unlike somethings in life, you see instant results from your efforts. Now, that's a reason to do yard work!! (Can I get an "Amen!")

I must admit that I have a not so secret deadline that I am working toward...my son's first birthday on May 19. We WILL be having a party in our backyard! And if you saw our backyard, you will know that this is not some easy task before me. (perhaps I will post some "before" pics)

So...I will continue to dig, pull, vision, plant, paint, stain, compost and search Craigslist.com for deals. I plan to take you on the journey of transformation with me.

The Tao of Organic Gardening: Rethink and Apply

It begins with the mind. Rethinking how you approach the soil is equally important as what you do to the soil. Consider this: When ants help themselves to your strawberries, or
squash beetles nestle in your pumpkin patch, you're more likely to strap on a mask and empty a tank of "KILL 'EM DEAD" solution over their intrusive bug-eyed heads. Hardly a natural solution, though naturally, that is how we sometimes approach our pest problems. A stain on an otherwise blemish-free masterpiece. However, considering your garden as part of the whole--instead of a pretty project--will ultimately affect your gardening methods. In an organic garden, observation is key, creativity
is rewarded, and learning is inevitable. With those paradigms in place, there are four cornerstones of organic gardening that you should begin practicing: conserving water, building good soil, taking proper care of the soil, and integrated pest management.

Watering Wisely

"It is every gardener's responsibility to set up water-wise systems. potential of plant sunburn...Yes, plants do get sunburned!

There
is no exact prescription for watering. Test and watch the soil using a
finger or shovel, checking for even moisture similar to that of a
wrung-out sponge.

You can tell how much water a plant needs based on age, and of course, close observation.

Water SOIL, not plants. digging is a method invented by Johns Jeavons of Ecology Action, and
fully endorsed and practiced by gardeners all over the world. Deborah Tull teaches workshop attendees how to double
dig and its various benefits. Though it takes more time (and energy) to
complete than single digging, this method effectively builds healthy
soil. "Double-digging adds air deep into
the soil and enables roots to grow and the microbes to create good soil
structure," Jeavons says. The video shown below is very similar to the method Deborah uses, however, before pushing any excavated soil into an empty trench, we added a few inches of compost to the dirt. The dirt from the first trench should be placed in a wheelbarrow so that it can be shoveled into the last trench of your bed. By adding compost each time, the soil is always well nourished with nutrients.

The Tao of Organic Gardening: Getting Started

Sustainability
coach, Deborah Eden Tull believes in simplicity. It permeates her
lifestyle and is the basis of her gardening philosophy. However, though
her principles may be basic, Deborah insists that novices and veterans
alike approach gardening thoughtfully; working with and not against
nature, giving back to the soil, and tending the garden with a watchful
eye and an open mind. "Gardening is about "getting down
to earth." It requires your time, care, observation, and the
willingness to learn about the relationships within the garden," Tull declares.

What is organic gardening?

Organic
gardening isn't just a lack of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.
Organic gardening requires you to consider your garden as part of
nature as a whole, not an entity separate from hungry rabbits, aphids, or
sweltering summers. Organic gardeners work
in harmony with the natural environment, and have a responsibility to
create and maintain healthy soil--replenishing what is lacking and
nourishing it with organic matter. Organic gardening is a not a new practice, it is a paradigm shift that will change your approach to the environment.

In
Tull's terms, focusing on soil yields greater results in your garden
and in your personal awareness of how you impact the environment. As in
any relationship, both parties give and take. Gardening is no
different. Healthy soil produces healthy plants. "By focusing on soil,
I get something far more rewarding than just food: a long-term
relationship with the plot of dirt I'm working on and a garden that
will sustain itself long-term, becoming even richer and healthier over
time....On the other hand, if my focus is on "growing the most plants
and biggest plants I can, as quickly as I can", I might be prone to use
pesticides and Miracle Grow or plant inappropriately. I will simply be
gardening from a misinformed premise and will miss out on the great
opportunity to become intimate with the earth."

How do I begin?

Tull offers this quote as a starting point:
"Start with one bed and tend it well." Alan Chadwick

Whether you are a self-proclaimed Gabor sister exploring Green Acres
or a seasoned green thumb, despite your level of expertise, everyone
needs a good beginning. The
following is derived from a chapter in her yet to be released book.

Test your soil. Urban soil always runs the risk if being contaminated. If you desire a healthy garden, begin by getting acquainted with your dirt. Your soil may be completely healthy, but it helps to know exactly what you're working with to avoid confusion and disappointment later. Visit the National
Sustainable Agriculture Information Service to locate soil testing in your area.

Find a sunny spot in your yard and design your garden beds. Break the bondage of spatial limitations! Using your imagination you can grow on hillsides, in tires, and perhaps an old lunch tin. As a coach, Deborah has helped many a wanna-be gardener bring life to an awkward space by considering unique containers, and both horizontal and vertical options.

Gather your compost. If you haven't begun to compost, begin now! Your soil needs to be nourished regularly with fresh, decaying, organic matter. Purchasing a bag of organic compost will buy you some time.

Set up an efficient watering system.
Add a watering can and hose with an adjustable watering attachment to your gardening tool box." I prefer hand-watering to irrigation (or along with irrigation) if your
garden is small enough to manage, so that you can pay better attention
to how much water gets used."

Learn What Climate Zone You Are In. Knowing what growing climate you are in can help you determine your gardening possibilities and limitations. "For instance, someone gardening in Los Angeles, Zone
10, is able to grow different crops than someone gardening in the
Sierra foothills." You can determine what zone you are in at
http://www.garden.org/zipzone/.

Begin Attracting Beneficial Insects Deborah encourages attracting hungry, helpful insects to minimize your pest issues. Ladybugs, lacewings, and nematodes are examples of natural
pest controllers. Practical tips on attracting these garden hands can be found here.

Once

Revitalize Your Home, Body, and Spirit

A home is always more inviting when embraced in a pleasing smell. This is not surprising
information. We all prefer the fragrance of roses over rotting banana
peels and dried oatmeal. Yet, where you aware that your home's aroma has healing potential? That
is, of course, if the smells are not chemical created, but contain
naturally occurring essential oils. Essential oils are distilled from
the leaves, seeds, flowers, bark, and
roots of plants. Their natural therapeutic properties benefit the mind
and body when inhaled or applied directly to the skin.

The founders of
Golden Path Alchemy have a single mission: to
revitalize and nourish the body using the natural therapeutic powers of
herbs and essential oils. Inspired by the harmony of the earth's
natural elements, aromatherapy experts Minka Robinson and
Ashley Beckman have created a line of all natural products ( all by
hand) that
features room sprays, skin and body care, as a refreshing alternative
to the harmful synthetic products that overload our senses. Their
passion for nature and holistic health inspired EcoHomeResource to
learn how we can effectively incorporate the use of essential oils in
the home. One half of the duo, Ashley, allowed us to pick her brain and shared valuable
insight on the truth behind synthetic scents, where to use specific
oils, and safety tips.

What exactly are essential oils?
Essential oils are aromatic volatile liquids distilled from flowers,
roots, seeds, shrubs and trees. Essential oils have been used
medicinally since 4500 BC. Modern uses are to kill bacteria, viruses
and fungi; stimulate the regeneration of tissue; and to oxygenate the
cells.

What are the benefits of using essentials oils as opposed to chemically created scents?

Essential oils have an affinity for the emotions as well because
they are proven to affect the limbic system of the brain, which is the
storehouse of the emotions. When an essential oil is released it
stimulates the olfactory system (our sense of smell), which has an
almost instantaneous effect on our sense of taste and the limbic system
(our emotions, long term memory, behavior). The most common emotions
affected by our sense of smell (and essential oils) are anxiety, fear,
joy, depression and anger. Keep in mind that ADULTURATED OILS DO NOT
HAVE MEDICINAL PROPERTIES. They must be pure! So whenever a synthetic
essential oil is used it does not have a therapeutic benefit. Lavender
candles, rooms sprays etc that do not use pure oils do not really relax
you. Often the synthetic fragrance is actually harmful to the body.
Lavandin is a hybrid sold cheaply here, manufactured in China, Russia,
France and Tasmania that is cut with a synthetic and then many solvents
including popylene glycol are added and sold as lavender oil.

During winter, people are often prone to depression, anxiety, and
stress. What essential oils would you recommend for these winter blues?

Most of the citrus
oils are good for this.
Jasmine, lemon, neroli, orange, bergamot, sage, frankincense,
peppermint, and grapefruit - all good for depression. For stress:
Lavender, chamomile, blue tansy, marjoram, rose, sandalwood,
frankincense, cedarwood. [And for] anxiety-- lavender, chamomile, or
rose.

Since EcoHomeResource deals primarily with the home, what scents would you
use in each room?

I would use Sacred Space Alchemyst for the bedroom, living room,
kitchen, bathroom and guest bedroom. It has sacred sage, sandalwood and

native to the American West, cleanses and purifies mind, body and
spirit.

• Pink Salt helps remove toxins and boost circulation.
Pink salt contains more than 84 minerals and trace elements. It ionizes
the air to nourish, clear and calm any space.

    • Cedar promotes emotional balance, heightened spiritual awareness and meditation.

I would use Oneness Alchemyst in the bedroom, nursery and guest bedroom
(and living room). It is a blend of handmade gardenia floral water,
rose, geranium, lavender, and grapefruit essential oils. It is great to
promote peace and happiness within a family, couples, to reduce stress
and calm down a baby.

    • Gardenia, an intoxicating aphrodisiac, draws love to all.

• Rose essential oil has the highest frequency of any oil. It is
calming both to the mind and the skin, reduces redness, soothes broken
capillaries and revives tired, aged skin.

• Jasmine opens emotions and elevates confidence, energy
and optimism. Jasmine gives rise to a sense of euphoria, beauty and
love.

For the office, we have a product called Clarity Alchemyst which has a blend of jasmine, peppermint, lemon, lavender and rosemary.

    • Peppermint regulates the nervous system, stimulates and purifies the mind.

    • Rosemary invigorates the mind and body relieving tiredness and depression, while equilibrating the endocrine system.

• Lavender induces a heightened sense of relaxation and improves mental
accuracy and concentration. Lavender is an adaptogenic oil that
balances the body and soothes the mind, body and spirit.

What should consumers consider when experimenting with oils on their own?

Always remember that essential oils are very concentrated. Make sure to
keep a bottle of pure vegetable oil handy in case you need to dilute
the oils - this is a great base for experimenting with essential oils.
It is always best to test an essential oil first before applying oils
to a arge area. You can test by adding a drop or two to the inside of
the forearm and wait 24 hours to see if there is a reaction. The best
way to try essential oils first is to dilute 2-4 drops of essential oil
on 1/2 tsp of massage oil, or pure vegetable oil such as almond, olive,
sesame, coconut or jojoba. Coconut can deodorize the oils - so it is
not an ideal base. Start out simply first - keep your blends to three
to four oils. You can always add more later as you become more
experienced. It is also best to store your essential oils in glass
containers because the oils can break down the plastic leading to
chemicals (BPA, pthalates) leaching into your oil blend.

Are your products safe for persons with allergies?

Our products are safe for those with allergies, but you should
definitely read all ingredients before trying them out. We do use many
essential oils and herbs in our products. All are free from
preservatives though, which is often a source of an allergic reaction.
We list every ingredient on the individual product pages and our
bottles so people can double check for any ingredients they may be
allergic to.

  What about animals?

Our products are safe for animals as well. We have actually had
quite a few people call to say that their dogs had eaten some of our
products - probably because they are technically "food for the skin" so
it is safe! Apparently our Renew Cleanser (coconut cream cleanser) and
Goji Glow Mask (goji berries and pure cane sugar) and very tasty treats
for dogs!

It
is very hard to decide what my personal favorite is: it would have to
be the Renew Starter Kit: That comes with a Renew Cleanser, Renew
Toner, Renew Serum and Refine Healing Herbal Serum. Out of that I guess
the Renew Cleanser is my ultimate favorite. It is a coconut milk, cream
and butter base with rice bran. It is gently exfoliating and very
nourishing. It is a great "all in one" for people with a busy lifestyle
and for men! I need to add a few drops of the Renew Serum and Refine
Healing Herbal Serum for extra moisturizer, but some people are
satisfied only using the cleanser.

Laundry Solutions

The laundry room is an easy place to start greening your home, as
it has only three major components: appliances, products, and clothing.
Yet this small room greatly impacts the water consumption and energy
use of the home. Taking the following quiz will let you know if you are
on the right track toward a sustainable laundry room.

Laundry Room Checklist

Do you have an energy efficient washer/dryer?

Are you washing more loads with cold water?

Are your products sustainable?

Are your clothes made of natural fibers?

Are you using alternative cleaning methods between large loads

BONUS: Have you changed the lighting?

If
you answered no to any of these questions, keep reading about why these
are necessary changes and how you can make the switch a greener,
healthier laundry room.

1. Do you have an energy efficient washer/dryer?
Top
loading are cheaper initially but the larger capacity of front loading
washers make them more energy efficient over time. Larger capacity
means fewer loads, fewer loads mean less water used. Additionally, top
loaders need enough water to cover the clothes, while the horizontal
design of a front loading machine doesn't require a machine full of
water.

The Solution: If you can purchase an
Energy Star front-loading washer, then do so. As for dryers, purchasing
a dryer with a moisture sensor conserves energy, instead of continually
drying dry clothes. Cleaning the lint trap improves circulation and
energy use.

2. Are you washing more loads with cold water?
90% of the energy use to wash a load of water comes from heat.

The Solution:
By
washing some of your loads in cold water, you can save money and
conserve water. Of course, hot water should be used when necessary to
kill germs. White vinegar also kills bacteria.

3. Are your products sustainable? Personal health and environmental health are both heavily connected to the products we favor.

Detergent:
Detergents
contain many harmful chemicals that adversely affect both you and the
environment. Due to trade-secret laws, cleaner manufacturers don't have
to disclose their ingredients; however, the following chemicals are
used often in many detergents:

Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) are
surfactants that belong to a class of hormone-disrupting compounds
called alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs). These are inexpensive, which
makes them a popular choice, but derived from petroleum. When loose
into the environment, these NPE's break down into nonylphenol, which is
harmful to fish and difficult to eliminate during water treatment.

Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS)( labeled as anionic surfactants) are used often in conjunction with NPEs. This surfectant strips oxygen from the water.
In
detergents, synthetic fragrances, dyes, and optical brighteners are
commonly used for added appeal, but can also result in asthma attacks,
rashes, and other respiratory problems.

Softeners: Dryer
sheets and fabric softeners can contain some seriously harsh chemicals;
alpha-terpineol, benzyl acetate, camphor, benzyl alcohol, limonene,
ethyl acetate, pentane, and chloroform. You can absorb these chemicals
through your skin or inhalation. When heated, dryer sheets release
chemicals through dryer vents and into the environment. Health effects
from being exposed to the chemicals in fabric softeners include:
* Headaches
* Nausea
* Dizziness
* Irritation to skin, mucus membranes and respiratory tract

The Solution: Seventh Generation and Method both make eco-friendly products that may cost a little lore than your
leading detergent brands. However, the high concentration level yields
a larger number of loads and evens out the initial cost. Or you can
make your own detergents and softeners with natural occurring products
like borax, glisterine, vinegar, and water. Adding essential oil to
this mixture will provide you with a pleasing scent. For DIY recipes visit thesimpledollar.com and tipnut.com.

Bleach Alternatives: Chlorine
reacts with environmental organic matter, creating harmful
organochlorines that damage the earth's ozone layer an weaken vital
bodily functions like your immune system. They also damage the earth's ozone layer.

The Solution:
You can eliminate stains with a pasty homemade concoction of Borax and
water. White vinegar also brightens clothing. then again, natural,
ready made stain removers are always with retail's reach.

4. Are your clothes made of natural fibers?
Synthetic
fibers often cause static cling and require more water and chemicals to
create. Cotton. Hemp. Linen. Choose organic fibers that have been
harvested humanely.

5. Are you using alternative cleaning methods between large loads? Hand-washing
a selection of clothing can preserve the life of your garments and be
easier on water and energy levels in your home. By drying clothing on
the rack, or removing slightly damp clothing from
the dryer to line dry, you also conserve energy and increase the life
span of the clothing. According to StopGlobalWarming.org, line drying your clothes can save 700 pounds of carbon dioxide from escaping in the air each year.

The Solution: Purchase a drying rack or set up clothing line in your back yard. Read labels to see which pieces should be hand washed.

6. Have you changed the lighting?
This is a minor detail, but still important. Simply replace your
florescent bulb with an energy conserving bulb, and you're done!

Start
where you can! Even if you just purchased a new top-loading washer and
dryer, you can still employ good habits by purchasing the proper
products and only doing full loads.

For more information and laundry tips, consider the following resources:

more information on sustainable laundry rooms,
for and interactive experience of the laundry room,

tips from Dr. Alan Greene-- a published expert,

removing toxins from your life via the laundry room, and finally, the five best eco-friendly laundry reviews.

As a
home-owner or apartment dweller, one of the largest concerns one need be wary
of, is the ever-existent threat of fire. If you live in a dry, chaparral-heavy
environment such as Southern California, that threat is doubly present. Yet,
even in the looming presence of
this potentially life and home-threatening hazard, most of us are either
unprepared or ignorant with regards to fire protection, fire prevention, and
most importantly fire extinguishment. Some interesting legal developments have
taken place over the past ten years regarding toxic chemicals and fire
retardants, both on a federal and state level. The most widely used fire retardant chemicals in the world
are called polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs.

In 2003, California passed a state-wide ban on these
controversial flame retardant chemicals, due to mounting evidence that these
particular chemicals accumulate in human and animal fat tissue, and may lead to
an array of health issues such as thyroid, liver, and brain toxicity. The ban
covered two forms of PBDEs: octa and penta. According to Environment California, since
California's ban of two types of PBDEs in 2003, several states have taken
action against these chemicals, including Maine, Hawaii, Michigan, Washington,
Oregon, Illinois, Maryland and New York. The European Union also passed a ban
in 2002. Now with a third ban lined up for the last remaining PBDE before
the California state legislature, Californians will be left with little fire
protection, as manufacturers will be forced to halt the inclusion of dangerous
flame-retardant chemicals in furniture, electronics, and household items that were previously required
stipulations. So in the foreseeable future, California's furniture, upholstery,
carpets, and electronics, while moving in an amiably less chemically-laden

it is also a great contributor to producing greenhouse gases. Cold

The reason Cold Fire products stand out
so significantly is because they are not only sustainable and non-toxic, but
they are extraordinarily effective, even with ethanol-fires. Ethanol fires are notoriously some of
the hardest fires to put out -The suppressants in Cold Fire use water as a
catalyst to remove the heat as well as encapsulate and breakdown the
hydrocarbons in the fuel source to extinguish the fire more rapidly, which is
why they are now gaining international recognition as the world's leading
environmentally friendly fire extinguishing agent, leading the way in fire
fighting technology, and revolutionizing the way fire fighters combat fires (see news coverage on Cold Fire). The
company is quickly gaining support from fire departments, law enforcement
agencies, and speed racing tracks nationwide, as they are slowly converting to
the company's non-toxic and markedly effective products. But the products are
not just for commercial or professional use, they are also appropriate for in
home use. Click here to see a demo.

to form it's own thermal insulation barrier to prevent dangerous flames from
spreading. It also inhibits the development of toxic hydrocarbon smoke. It is
so eco-friendly that it can even be put directly on clothing, carpets,
upholstery, and furniture, as it is non-corrosive and does not stain (not to
mention has NO toxic chemicals).

For fire
suppressants, the company manufactures a product called Cold Fire Rapid
Cooldown Spray. The product was designed as a safety tool for trade
applications, as it is used to cool down hot surfaces rapidly. It is an
excellent tool for plumbers, welders, roofers, mechanics, and all others who
work with hot surfaces and open flames. But it will also work in the home for
any plumbing, heating, mechanical, or roofing applications that may pose the
threat of surface overheating.

For fire
extinguishment, the company manufactures portable extinguishers that come in
1.5 and 2.5 gallon water extinguishing units for first response. One quart of
Cold Fire is added to 8 quartz of water to equal a 10% solution (so the
extinguisher is filled with mostly water). When applied to a fire, it quickly
penetrates the hot surface and extracts the heat from a fire without steam
conversion (water and foam extinguishers do not have the same penetration
capability of Cold Fire). The tanks are even completely recyclable and reusable to boot! Click here to see news coverage of the company and product.

The company even offers to provide inquirers with MSDS & Toxicity test information upon request. So whether you choose to purchase one of these
aforementioned products, or all three, know that you are providing your family
with an invaluable gift: that of safety through fire prevention, as well as
through the eco-friendly forethought you will have demonstrated by investing in
a non-toxic, chemical-free fire-extinguishing alternative.

How Green is Your Oil?

More than likely, most people consider greening their car by walking or
biking to work, purchasing a hybrid or Smart Car, carpooling, or just
driving less in general. But how many have considered the oil
filter? (Besides being charged 49.99 for an oil change). Luckily, folks
in the
car industry have been brainstorming away, trying to come up with
solutions to an oil problem many of us don't think about often.

Why should we use reusable oil filters?
With
four hundred and fifty million oil filters manufactured and sold in the
United States, two million gallons of waste oil contaminate California
landfills alone. Much of this waste oil comes from persons who haven't
properly disposed of their oil filters.

Improper handling of
old oil includes crushing. Crushing the can is wasteful since there is
still oil left in the filter when it arrives at the landfill. Though
hot-draining (punching holes in the filter while the oil is above 60
degrees and letting it drain out) has been the proper
disposal method of choice, residuals of at least 11 ounces of oil are
still left behind. Since it only takes one gallon of oil to contaminate
up to one million gallons of fresh water, having a reusable oil filter
can help to decrease the potential of contaminating groundwater, soil,
and surface water.

What are the benefits?
The benefits are
two-fold; environmental and economical.
Benefits for the Environment

conserves a non-renewable resource--oil

eliminates presence of oil filters in landfills

provides finer filtration for cleaner oil and less emission

keeps used oil from contaminating water sources and soil

While
the car is still in excellent condition, you must maintain its working capacity
with regular oil changes. A reusable oil filter will save you money
over a span of 2 years due to:

fewer oil changes

eliminates need to purchase new filters

eliminates disposal costs

Price Range
Prices range from $65 to $130 for cars and small trucks.

Perspective
Case
studies have been conducted to test the efficiency of reusable filters
and most results were gathered from fleets (large groups of cars or
trucks that are used by one company i.e. police department.) However,
considering there are fleets of cars driving up and down the highways
of our country, these findings are still useful to the pedestrian car
driver.

Purchasing Options
According
to Go Green Oil Filter President Paul Rogowski, "There is no reasonable
explanation why we are still using non-reusable filters. In today's
age, with all our technological advances, we are still a throw away
society."

GoGreen Oil Filters

all adhesives uses are non-aerosol, with no CFCs

only biodegradable cleaners are used

Shipping materials are recycled

all waste aluminum is recycled

filters reusable

reclaims 100% of oil in the filter

Fuel Eco Systems
In an interview with a local tv station in Austin, TX, Rich Pearlman of Fuel Eco Systems explains the increased practicality and efficiency of the Lifetime Oil Filter as opposed to conventional oil filter.

"The conventional oil filter, the oil actually never
goes through the paper fibers; it actually goes along the outside of
the fibers and after debris or metal shavings of your engine catches in
between the pleats, that's the only way it keeps your oil clean," he
said."With a Lifetime oil filter, it's designed for your
oil to actually go through this mesh, the stainless steel mesh," he
said. "It keeps your oil clean." A Lifetime filter has the

Can help extend mileage between
oil changes, thereby reducing the used oil waste.
