Paint is most harmful to indoor air quality, where volatile organic compounds (VOCs) collect due to lack of ventilation. Headaches, dizziness, fatigue, asthma, cancer, and heart disease may all be side effects of such indoor air pollution. Healthy alternatives are labeled as low-VOC paints by the EPA, with a more stringent category of zero-VOC reserved for those who nearly elminate VOCs from their product. Among low-VOC options are natural paints, which include clay paint, lime wash, and milk paint, though the color options and durability of such paints varies. For outdoor use, VOCs are not as harmful.

American Pride

Product Highlights: all American Pride paints are Green Seal certified, are usually solvent-free (zero VOC), and never contain chemicals that are suspected carcinogens.

Customer Reviews: Positive: American Pride. More colors makes them a good addition to Yolo. The paint is equally "green" with no smell and also coats well in dark colors. They, like Yolo, have large swatches that you can buy and tape to the wall to see how the color looks without having to paint a sample. As was the case with Yolo, the eggshell finish wasn't chalky in the least.... as some have complained. And it comes in quarts. (ecovertex.com)

AMF Safecoat

Anna Sova Organics

Product Highlights: 99 percent of its paints comprise food-grade ingredients. For a bit extra, you can mix in aromatherapy scents to have your walls smelling of fresh lemons, creamy vanilla milkshakes, or sandlewood.

Customer Reviews: Positive: The advantage is the access to this through their many outlets. Clearly Benjamin Moore has spent time, money and effort to establish this paint with the professionals. No complaints on the selection of colors. The coverage was as expected with any of their paints. They have yet to launch the semigloss line, but matte, eggshell and satin are all available and perform well to scrubbing. It is fast drying which makes it a favored for paint contractors. The price is competitive. They haven't created an eco friendly PVA yet, so you'll have to use from their old Eco Spec line (seems to be phasing out). There is some odor, so it doesn't feel as green as the other two I've mentioned.

Bio-Shield Paint

Product Highlights: 98% of these low-environmental-impact paints are made from renewable and naturally-derived raw materials, such as citrus peel extracts, essential oils, seed oils, tree resins, inert mineral fillers, tree and bee waxes, lead-free dryers, and natural pigments

Product Highlights: 100% recycled latex paint in 14 colors.

Pros: It often only takes one coat of ecocoat to cover the same as 2 - 4 coats of a lesser quality virgin paint which may cost you two to three times as much!

Cons: Touch-ups are not recommended from a different paint batch, possibly not an exact match.

Customer Reviews: Positive: Yolo. My favorite. The colors are wonderful. I've met the two founders of this company and their creative backgrounds in the ad agency world comes through when you look at the color palette choices, the packaging and the attention to final product. While there isn't an extensive choice of colors with Yolo, the ones the do have are "tried and true" winners. And they coordinate in a way that makes you feel as if a professional designer chose your colors. The product goes on well and even the deepest of colors covers in two coats.
