Pros: Easy installation. Comfort. Sound absorbent. Low price. Better at trapping allergens than hardwoods- so you don’t end up breathing them in. New carpet releases lowest VOC indoors, and the VOCs emitted clear quickly.
Cons: Smell absorbent. Traps dust and dirt. Not as environmentally friendly. Susceptible to damage. Holds moisture. Durability dependent on quality of care.
Cork
Product Highlights: Alternative for tiling or hardwood.
Size/Capacity:
Price: $4-10 per square foot
Pros: For Environment: -Cork is gathered from bark of oak trees. >Can be harvested every 9 years without damage to the tree or the environment. -It’s recycled! Made from leftovers for the production of bottle stopper corks. For you! -Soft to walk on. -As easy to install as linoleum or vinyl tiles. -Available in many colors and patterns -Resistance to mold, mildew, and insects. -Durability is based on what product is used to finish the floor. -Fire resistant-has suberin. Cork will not allow for fire to spread and will not release toxic fumes. Suberin and cellular structure protects from water.
Cons: -Scratching can occur usually from dirt and sand when floor isn’t swept. -Sharp or heavy objects can cause permanent damage if left on the floor for a long period of time. >It is recommended to use padding under pressure points to avoid this. -Direct sunlight will cause color to fade over time. -Age also causes color to change. -Negative reaction for water when left for a long time. -May only be harvested every 9 years-which limits availability of the product.
Linoleum
Product Highlights: Uses linseed oil, cork dust, wood flour, tree resins, etc. All renewable and/or recycled content.

Pros: Environment: -Biodegradable. -Non toxic For you! -Hypoallergenic -Durable. -Easy to clean -Good support for feet; comfortable -Smooth -Won’t dent easily -Gets tougher over time -Naturally fire resistant -Anti-static (repels dust)
Cons: -Made in Europe so requires energy to transport -Standing water can cause damage to it.
Rubber
Product Highlights: Used where safety is a concern.

Price: $5-7 per sq foot
Pros: Environment: -Made from recycled materials. For you! -Slip resistance- makes it good by pools and fountains. -Easy maintenance -Tough and durable- meant for heavy traffic. -Good for impact absorption. Eases stress on feet. -Sound absorption: Good for play rooms, gyms, etc -Some are treated to decrease static electricity build up. -Can be installed under wood or tile floors for more comfort, insulation, and sound absorption.
Cons: -Expensive initial investment. -Used to seeing them in commercial settings like the hospital or gym- may not be right for the individual.
Tile
Product Highlights: Made of ceramic, glass, or stone. Good for high traffic areas like kitchens, hallways, entries, etc.

Price: $4-24 per sq ft
Pros: Most durable Uses recycled content and can resemble different stones and colors shapes, sizes, and patterns Easy installation Requires sturdy subfloor. Cleans easily with neutral floor cleaner
Cons: Feels colder in low temperature environments Hard on feet Can be very expensive depending on what you choose Can crack or chip and is difficult to repair Slippery when wet Can be discolored by grout Hard to maintain Hard to Install
Wood
Product Highlights: Similar bamboo in regards to its hardness, sound, maintenance.
Size/Capacity:
Price: $1-6 per sq ft
Pros: For Environment: -Reclaimed Wood which is salvaged from under older buildings and such. This makes it so that wood does not end up in landfills, instead it is recycled. Saves trees. For you! -Easy to clean -Hypoallergenic -Soft and warm under foot -Lasts long -Can be less expensive depending on the type of wood
Cons: Not so resistant to scratches as harder surfaces. Not good with heavy traffic, kids, or pets. Must be cleaned regularly Can be affected by moisture. Reacts to humidity and wears naturally over time Maintenance is difficult as you shouldn’t move furniture over the surface and should place mats near sinks to avoid spills
