Up to half of the energy used in the home comes from heating and cooling. If you own a unit more than 8 years old, the savings in energy costs from a new unit will likely cover the cost of that unit. Furthermore, for every kilowatt hour of electricity you save, you prevent the release of 1.34 lbs. of carbon dioxide. Also, many rebates for new, efficient units are available from government agencies. To determine the proper BTU for a room, take the square footage, multiply by 10, and add 4,000. The EER is cooling output divided by power consumption, and over 10.7 meets Energy Star’s requirements.

Customer Reviews:
"Yes, it cools the room nicely. Yes, the fan option, energy saver and timer are all good.
Bottom line, if you're considering this unit for a room that you'd prefer to be quiet... like, say maybe a bedroom, you may want to rethink this unit. I've had mine for two years now, and now it makes such a racket that some nights it will wake me up - or keep me awake. Other reviewers have mentioned the poor quality of this unit and I agree. Everything rattles. Right now I have the front cover in the down/open position all the time, because that rattled. I had to take out the filter because that rattled. The compressor rattles every time it kicks on.
So, next year I have to buy another AC for my bedroom and you can bet it won't be a Kenmore."
"i had expected so much more from kenmore but this has sent up the red flags on future kenmore/sears purchases for me. while i have a large size one bedroom apartment, and the unit seems to work fine, i am dissappointed in the workmanship, to say the least. the grille and it's makeup are of the poorest shabbiest quality. i don't think the vent controls could be any cheaper and the grille itself has hinges for opening to check/change the filter, and they aren't much bigger than the lead in a pencil. these are expected to last the life of the appliance?! i don't think so. if this is of cheapest quality, one can only wonder about the rest of the unit. i've noticed it's beginning to rattle-so i wonder what's next. phooey!"

8,000 BTU Window Room Air Conditioner with PLASMA Heat Exchanger and Energy Star
Size/Capacity: 8,000 BTU
Price: $199.99
Customer Reviews:
I purchased to 18K btu unit, not this one.
But I am very unhappy with mine. The unit is very noisy, it shakes the whole house everytime the compressor kicks on. It constantly kicks on and off, yet the house never stays evenly cool because the vent are so poorly designed.
They can only be adjusted at a very limited angle, side and up/down. I only keep it because I can't lift it and it was a pain to install. The LG website did not even bother to reply to my complaint. I will NEVER buy anything from LG again.

Customer Reviews:
I can strongly recommend the Sharp Library Quiet Window Air Condtioners. They are excellent quality, quiet, durable and easy-to-use. I have three of them so I speak with experience. The fan has 3 speeds and the temperature control is digital. The unit even has a remote control, but I have never even used it. I just set the temperature at about 73 degrees and the air conditioner takes care of everything. The Sharp Window Air Condtioner is attractive, powerful and simple-to-use.
The listing is for the 80DX. My units are 60DX which are 6,000 BTU. They are less powerful and more affordable than the 80DX listed selling at around $130. I have found that even the 60DX is quite powerful. One unit cools the kitchen and the dining room and has enough left over to take some of the heat out of the living room. My two other units are in two bedrooms. I only run one unit during the day and sometimes, but not always, use the bedroom units at night. The one unit is very easy on electricity.
I have a Sharp Library Quiet A/C and it's so noisy I have to turn it off to listen to the television. I don't recommend it. If you buy cheap, you get cheap.
