Now that we are going green, we are trying to find as many ways to use organic products in every area of our lives. We put them in our homes, on our lawns, make our homes out of them, and even on our face. But have you ever considered of putting the same ingredients in your hair? Probably bottled and mixed in with a lot of other ingredients that we never heard of. The thing is that we are so used to buying bottled, "organic" shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, lotions, and oils, that we tend to forget that we can put these delicious home ingredients in our hair as well. They will serve the same purpose as if we were to buy the bottled stuff.

When we go shopping for organic products in the food section, they will make sure it is organic. The problem is when it comes to cosmetics, it's really hard to find actual organic products. The term "organic" by marketing companies is not governed by laws. They utilize the words 'organic' and 'natural' purely to market and sell their products. They may add a tiny amount of natural ingredient, typically a small amount of extract, while the rest are synthetic ingredients.

One thing that we can look for, if we are using bottled shampoos and conditioners, is labeling that features the Certified Organic seal from one of the recognized certifying bodies -- such as the USDA and the UK Soil Association, or especially the even more demanding standards of ACO -- Australian Certified Organic! However, there are few products that actually contain the seal. One product line that does contain the organic seal is Miessence. It bears the seal of approval by Australia's leading certifying body, the Australian Certified Organic (ACO).

Now, if we want to create our own organic shampoo and conditioner, there are products right in our kitchen that can do the same thing to our hair, without all of the added ingredients.
EGG

Now I know this seems a little weird, but hear me out. Egg yolk is rich in fat and protein that naturally moisturize. Egg whites contain an enzyme eating bacteria, raising the oil that is not needed. For normal hair, you can use the whole egg as a hair moisturizer. For oily hair, only the egg white is needed. You can use the whole egg about once a month and the egg white every two weeks. You only have to use a half a cup of this on wet hair and leave on for 20 minutes and rinse with cold water, so the egg doesn't boil.

SOUR CREAM, YOGURT, ETC.

Dry hair can look frizzy and dull and be prone to breakage. Milk products, like yogurt and sour cream, help to overcome the breakage. The lactic acid gently cleans the dirt out of your hair and milk fat moisturizes your hair. What you want to do is take 1/2 cup of sour cream or yogurt and put it on damp hair for about 20 minutes. Rinse with cold water and then shampoo, as usual.

LEMON

Lemon can be used for an itchy scalp. The acidity of the lemon helps relieve the dry skin on the head. What you can do is mix lemon and olive oil and the olive oil helps to moisturize the scalp. Take 2 teaspoons of each ingredient and 2 teaspoons of water and mix them and apply for wet hair. Leave it for 20 minutes, rinse and follow up with shampoo. This can be done every week.

AVOCADO

I'm a big fan of Avocado because now that I'm going natural myself, it's widely used to really repair your hair from damage that has been done to it. Avocado oil is mild and humid like your skin's natural oils that it releases. It also has proteins that lubricate hair. What you want to do is blend 1/2 of avocado on wet hair. Let it sit for 14 minutes and then rinse. To increase humidity, mix 1/2 avocado with ingredients such as sour cream, egg yolk, or mayonnaise. Repeat this every two weeks.

HONEY

Sun exposure and using hot appliances like flat irons can really dry out your hair. Natural sweeteners like honey attract and lock moisture in your hair. The way you prepare it is you take 1/2 cup of honey and massage it on wet clean hair. Let it sit for 20 minutes before rinsing. You can also add 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil so it can be more easily applied. If your hair is really damaged because of the sun, mix the honey to 1 to 2 tablespoons of protein rich ingredients, such s Avocado or Egg yolk to help replace the keratin attacked by ultraviolet light. This treatment can be done once a month.

All of these ingredients are right in our kitchens and can help us take care of our hair more organically. Instead of depending on bottled products to tell us if a product is organic, we can make sure we use healthy ingredients in our homes. A lot of them do the same thing if we were to buy shampoo and conditioner, but it will take patience and time. Take the time out and use these on your hair and see great results.
