Planning Your Green Kitchen

By Go Green Construction on
eco kitchen0003 copy.jpgThe kitchen is a center of activity, a gathering place. It is also the room in your home that can make the biggest difference in limiting waste, saving resources and improving efficiency.

eco kitchen0002.jpgConserving: from using passive solar techniques, energy efficient appliances, low flow faucets, and recycling, every small part makes a
difference. Changing out old appliances and fixtures is one quick way of making a large impact. Appliances will quickly pay for themselves; you'll be seeing a difference on your energy bills right away. The average home spends 20% of energy costs on appliances and electronics alone. Other ways to conserve include choosing cradle-to-cradle products that are recyclable, designing a set station for trash, recycle, and compost in your kitchen, and
buying locally produced materials. The less packaging and less distance it has to travel; the less waste.

When selecting materials keep in mind the possibility of reusing what you already have. If completely remodeling, hire a salvage company rather than a demolition team; donating old cabinets saves them from going straight to a
landfill. Consider using salvaged or vintage wood pieces in your kitchen, or rapidly renewable materials such as bamboo. When buying wood make sure it is FSC- certified, which insures it has been harvested responsibly. Other green materials include using 100% metal for cabinetry, concrete, ceramic tiles, cork and using low-no VOC paint.

Whether a small project or a major remodel, selecting the proper materials and products makes an important impact. Green design is all about having a neutral or positive effect on our environment and making informed decisions. So while planning your green kitchen research different products and investigate which ones are right for your project. Whether designing a sleek modern space or a traditional country room, green products and materials can be used to create any style.
