If You Only Do One Thing...

Normally, New Year's Resolutions are about bettering yourself, your body, or relationships. This year make sure to include the environment in your vows of improvement and you're sure to transform yourself. Even if you can only do one thing consistently, as long as it's one more friendly act toward the earth, it will be an improvement on the previous year. So, if you could only do one thing a day, or a week, or a month... what would it be? Here are 30 ideas to get you started.

1.  Bring your own mug to Starbucks and other coffee places. At Starbucks you'll  receive 10 cents off whenever you use your own mug. If you don't frequent Starbucks, why not ask at your favorite shop? They may/may not give you ten cents off, but you will enjoy coffee with no guilty strings attached.

2.     Support at least one local company. Buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and a smaller carbon footprint.

3.     Join a website that sends e-newsletters on going green. Educating yourself is a small part of the battle.

4.     Buy food in season. As you know already, the environmental impact of shipping and packaging is highly damaging.

5.     Buy a water filter and an aluminum water bottle.

6.     Get rid of those batteries! They probably don't work, and are cluttering your desk. Learn how to recycle them here at Earth911.com

7.     Need new batteries? Purchase rechargeable ones!

8.     Little stuff adds up. Get off of junk mail lists with GreenDimes.org. They'll even plant a tree for you!

9.     Try buying one reusable bag each time you go to the grocery store. Soon you'll have enough to go shopping without needing plastic or paper. Leave them in your car so you won't forget them on unexpected trips.

10.  Don't stop with grocery shopping; take your reusable bag to the convenience store, the mall, or restaurants for takeout.

11.  Go paperless. Back up copies of your e-bills on a flash drive specifically for bills.

12.  Completely revamp one room in your house that includes sustainable furniture, décor, lighting, even paint!

13.  Switch out all your cleaning products for non-toxic ones. You can also make your own.

14.  Install low flow showerheads.

15.  Add a plant to your décor. Mmm, smell that air quality!

16.  Learn to use every feature on your phone before upgrading.

17.  Commit to recycling one item. If you're already doing paper, add glass, or plastic. Bonus: You can get up 10 cents for some plastic beverage bottles.

18.  Stop meeting your friends everywhere. Carpool whenever you can!

19.  Support green hotels. When traveling, check into hotels with a green agenda.

20.  Someone is bound to have a baby, a birthday, or wedding this year. Buy sustainable gifts for others. Make sure to tell them about its benefits.

21.   Learn to compost. You can do it in a studio apartment or four-bedroom house. Even if you don't have a garden, take your dirt to the farmer's market as a gift to your favorite veggie vendor. Put the word out-- you'll find someone who wants your vitamin rich trash.

22.  Light a soy candle and enjoy cleaner air.

23.  Prep for winter--buy a space heater

24.  Recycle your sneakers. Feeling ambitious? Implement a shoe drive so others can do the same.

25.  Stop stalling and replace those light bulbs already

26.  Wouldn't you know it, Christmas and Thanksgiving, happen at the same time this year. Decorate like an eco-conscious celebrity this year and plan ahead for an eco-friendly holiday season

27.  Recycle your old computer with DELL , APPLE , SONY , or Hewlett-Packard's recycle programs.  Some will even allow you purchasing credit toward your next item.

28.  Play music in the shower to conserve water  The average song length is 3 mins and 20 secs. Not only will you save water, but you'll brighten your mood as well.

29.  Install a low flow toilet or try a frugal DIY method.

30.  Invest in reusable containers and eliminate plastic bags and wrap from your home.
