How To

A Guide to Essential Recycling

If your city has provided you with a single recycling bin, it's likely that your city has a sorting plant which will collect your recycling and separate it for you. It's not always necessary that you separate the recycling yourself, but you still want to be careful about what you separate into recycling and what you separate into trash. The following is a detailed guided of important-to-know, recycling specifics.

Due to advancements in recycling technology, it's not necessary that you remove the labels or bands from cans and bottles. Also, what goes into the recycling only needs to be clean enough to prevent odors. However, you still want to avoid recycling garbage which has traces of hazardous materials and garbage which has been contaminated by food, and in some cases dirt or water.

Glass

  • Broken glass is unacceptable because it does not sort well.
  • The more clear the glass, the better - glass is usually sorted by color (brown, amber, green or clear.)
  • Only certain glass is acceptable; window glass, light bulbs, mirrors, glass tableware, Pyrex, ceramic or auto glass should not be put into the general recycling.

Newspapers

  • Only newspapers that are clean and dry are acceptable.
  • It's acceptable to recycle any inserts that come with the newspaper.
  • Brown bags - such as grocery bags - can be recycled as well.
  • Do not recycle newspapers (or any papers) that have been contaminated by water, dirt, mold, food or anything else.
  • Do not include rubber bands, plastic bags or product samplers with the paper recycling.
  • If your town or city offers curbside newspaper recycling, store newspapers separately for pick-up.
  • There are many ways to reuse newspaper, here are a few.

Mixed paper

  • Junk mail, photocopies, computer print outs, cereal/shoe boxes, and in most cases phone books and corrugated cardboard is acceptable for recycling.
  • Staples are OK.
  • Do not mix paper recycling with stickers, napkins, tissues, waxed paper, milk cartons, carbon paper, neon paper, thermal fax paper or laminated paper (which includes fast food wraps and drink boxes.)
  • Paper - as well as cardboard, &c. - contaminated by food or water is unacceptable.
  • Envelopes which contain plastic windows are acceptable.

Metal

  • It's acceptable to recycle empty metal cans, lids, caps, bands and foil.
  • Every scrap of metal must be clean and emptied.
  • Full cans, spray cans or any cans with paint or hazardous waste are unacceptable.
  • Except for aluminum, and the metals mentioned above, other metals are rarely acceptable.
  • Magnetic metals are not acceptable.

Plastics

  • Most plastic are stamped with a number (often at the bottom of plastics such as containers and always inside of a recycling symbol.) Plastics stamped with a 1 or a 2 are acceptable to recycle.
  • Unless instructed to do otherwise, you should not recycle any plastic stamped with a 3,4,5,6 or 7.
  • If the Plastic has no number stamp, do not recycle it.

Other Plastics

  • Plastic grocery bags are acceptable for recycling, especially if they are marked with a 2 or a 4.
  • Bubble Wrap is acceptable for recycling as well as padded bubble envelops.
  • You can bring your plastic grocery bags back to the grocery store; many grocery stores have a barrel designated to recycling old bags.
  • It's a good idea to reuse bags when you can, rather than simply getting rid of them.

Not everything that's recyclable goes into the recycling bin. For specific recycling information, refer to the following sources:
