Eco Accessories for Your Nursery

By Lindsey Adams on

Most people are aware of some of the benefits of leading an eco-friendly lifestyle in today's environmentally conscious world--the reduction of emitting carbon gases, reducing land fill waste, renewable energy... the list goes on. But not everyone is aware of the positive health benefits also involved. By living a green life, you can eliminate exposure to harsh chemicals that pollute the air in your home. The negative health effects of chemicals seen in everyday products are increased greatly for babies, so having a green nursery is extra important!

Making your baby's nursery more environmentally friendly does not have to involve a complete remodel. In fact, an easy way to greatly reduce some of the harmful chemicals found in the nursery is through purchasing green decorations and accessories. These little items really add up, and can add to a more enjoyable and safe nursery.

Nurseries often boast wall decals and borders that are fun and playful for babies and toddlers to enjoy. However, many of these are made from vinyl or PVC, and use toxic adhesives. Instead, look for decals and borders that use low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound), water-based adhesive, and non-toxic, water-based inks and glazes. A great place to start is at Mod Green Pod, who silk screen all their decals and wall papers by hand, using only safe, healthy materials. Another company, Beearo, makes their wall decals from wood veneer that is manufactured in an environmentally sustainable way.

Another accessory that can be purchased in an eco-friendly manner is your baby's night-light. Choosing a night-light made from recycled materials keeps old materials out of land fills, and saves the energy required to make new products. For the healthiest option, choose one made from recycled glass or metal, but there are plastic ones available as well. VivaTerra has a beautiful selection of recycled glass night-lights, while Etsy offers a wide variety of recycled night-lights made from individual artists, just search "recycled night light."

Similar to night lights, when looking for a mobile, look for one made of recycled materials! Recycled paper and wood are the best options for mobiles, these materials are safest for your health, however plastic is a great option as well. Fawn & Forest has a great line of mobiles made from recycled paper, or you can make one at home! Instructables has a great step-by-step guide on how to make your own--be sure to use things you already had at home, and recycle old magazines and colorful papers.

When putting together a nursery for your baby, there are many things to consider in order to make it eco-friendly. Yet if it is not in your budget to redo the flooring and paint, or if you just don't want to remodel the room, there are easier steps to take, like buying safe products and accessories. Be sure to choose products made from non-toxic materials, and choosing something that is recycled is always a plus!
