Bright Ideas

Did you know the energy use of the average household in the U.S. emits twice the greenhouse emissions of the average car? By simply replacing the most frequently used fixtures/bulbs you can make an impact and help fight global warming.

Lighting is an important factor when designing your home. Daylighting allows lowering your use of electricity during the day, saving on energy in the long run. Natural light also provides an inviting, openness to the room. Think about installing skylights to reduce electricity during the day.

When it comes to choosing electric lighting, there needs to be sufficient ambient lighting as well as task lighting throughout the room, especially in designated work stations. Fluorescent lighting is energy efficient and is now available in warmer color temperatures. For the look of incandescent yellow glow choose a color temperature of 2700-3000 Kelvin, or for a more natural, daylight effects choose a color temperature of 4100 Kelvin. The color temperature along with CRI- color rendering index will be listed on the package, it is important to select a bulb with a CRI of 80 or higher, the lower the CRI, the poorer colors appear under the lighting.

Compact Fluorescent Lighting and LEDs are quickly gaining in popularity.
CFLs used to be looked down upon because of their quirky unappealing spiral
Shape, but fixtures and shades have developed in a variety of styles, effectively camouflaging the bulb. Simply changing your standard bulbs from incandescent to CFL can decrease energy use by 75% and CFLs last up to 10 times longer. LEDs initially cost more, however they can cut energy used by up to 90% and last an average of 100,000 hours.

Another way to contribute to reducing energy consumption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is installing motion sensors in rooms like your kitchen, bath or in hall ways. Dimmers allow more control over the amount of light and add to the ambiance at the same time. Most fluorescent fixtures and bulbs are able to use dimmable ballasts; make sure to specify the correct bulb, because some CFLs are still incompatible however.  If every household changed 5 of the most frequently used fixtures, it would cut emissions equal to taking 10 million cars off the road, and save approximately $8 billion dollars. Just think how that money could be put to better use.
