Shower Heads and Faucets
Standard kitchen and bathroom water faucets use 4 to 7 gallons of water per minute (gpm). This means that a single incidence of washing dishes may consume up to 120 gallons of water. Non-conserving shower heads use 5 to 8 gpm, consuming up to 40 gallons of water for a single five-minute shower. Federal law currently mandates that all toilets manufactured in the U.S. must use an average of 1.6 gallons per flush or less.High-Efficiency Toilets (HETs), which include dual-flush toilets, are fixtures that flush with even less water, using 20 percent below the 1.6-gallons-per-flush or less. The average water savings for HETs is estimated to be 38 gallons per day (gpd) when replacing an older toilet, and 7 gpd when replacing a ULFT.
