How To

Dirty Laundry: Keeping your clothes clean and chemical free

By Desiree Ramirez on

Try looking up "laundry detergent ingredients" on Google and you'll get a number of different things. Words like surfactant and diethyl ester dimethyl ammonium chloride aren't exactly words you think of or even consider when the daily green.jpgyou are doing your laundry. It would be interesting to see what percentage of Americans even consider what ingredients are being used in the laundry detergents they are soaking their clothing and bed sheets in. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency breaks down some of what goes into one of those great big bottles of Tide, but unfortunately most of the 'key characteristics of concern' all included the word TOXIC. It would be wise to consider a few things before you load up the washing machine with a big pile of your unmentionables next time: first off, it would be very eco-conscious of you to wash things that really need to be washed, and always remember to let the washing machine water fill up first before you add the soap and laundry, this will ensure a more thorough cleaning. Also, try to wash in cold water when you can. Getting this far is good, choosing the proper, eco-friendly detergent is better.

Where to start? Do a little homework before you make your next trip to the store. Seventh Generation has hailed praise from green consumers and offers a slew of "free and clear, natural" detergents in powder and liquid form. You can even view the ingredients of the detergents on their website. Sun & Earth offers natural, hypoallergenic, biodegradable, non-toxic laundry detergents that are free of allergens, dyes, perfumes, and petroleum-based products, also ideal for people with sensitive skin. Lastly, Ecover offers their own "laundry wash" aka detergent with plant based ingredients that is completely biodegradable, safe for the skin, and friendly for aquatic life in the ocean.

Ok so what if you're a creature of habit and want to stick to what you've always used because it smells good, is the cheapest, etc.? I suggest at least giving some of these products a try, most of them are about the same price your probably already paying, and see if you notice a difference not only in the way your clothes feel, but the way you feel also.
